Orthodontics Appliances

Overview

Orthodontic appliances are devices used to correct dental and skeletal irregularities, align teeth, and improve bite and facial esthetics. These appliances can be fixed or removable, depending on the treatment plan and the patient’s specific needs.

1. Fixed Orthodontic Appliances

Fixed appliances are attached to the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient. They provide continuous and controlled forces, making them highly effective for precise tooth movement.

  • Consist of metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth and connected with archwires.

  • Gradually move teeth into proper alignment.

  • Can be metal braces, ceramic (tooth-colored) braces, or self-ligating braces.

2. Removable Orthodontic Appliances

Removable appliances are taken out by the patient during eating and cleaning. They are generally used for minor corrections or in children during growth stages.

 Clear Aligners (e.g., Invisalign)

Transparent trays that fit snugly over the teeth.

Removable, comfortable, and nearly invisible.

Require discipline as success depends on patient compliance.

Extraoral Orthodontic Appliances

These appliances extend outside the mouth and are usually combined with fixed appliances to control growth or provide anchorage.

  • Straps worn around the head or neck, attached to braces.

  • Controls jaw growth and corrects bite issues such as overjet.

  • Used for children with underdeveloped upper jaw.

  • Encourages forward growth of the maxilla.

Retention Appliances

Retention is the final phase of orthodontic treatment, ensuring teeth stay in their new positions.

  • Fixed Retainers: A thin wire bonded behind the teeth for long-term stability.

  • Removable Retainers (Hawley or Essix): Worn daily or nightly to prevent relapse
