A Crown is used to entirely cover or cap a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape, or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is used because it is both strong and attractive.
The bridge is recommended if a patient missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
Bridges are cemented to the implants or natural teeth surrounding the empty space. These teeth are known as abutments, and function as anchors for the bridge.
A substitute tooth, known as a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. As with crowns, you have can choose the material for bridges.
Our dentists can help you decide which to apply. Dental bridges offer several advantages. They can usually be completed in only two dental appointments at Rehan Dental surgery, restore the tooth back to full chewing function, require no periodic removal for cleaning, have a long life expectancy, and are an aesthetic factor.
Preparation of Bridge or Crown
Before the bridge or crown can be prepared, the tooth or abutments must first be reduced in size so that bridge or crown can fit over it nicely. After reducing the tooth or abutment, our dentist will take an impression so as to provide an accurate mold for the crown or bridge. If porcelain is used, your dentist will decide the correct color for the bride or crown to match the color of your existing teeth.
Using this impression, our dental lab will make your bridge or crown, in the material our dentists specify. A temporary bridge or crown will be installed to shield the prepared tooth while the permanent bridge or crown is being made. When the permanent bridge or crown is ready to be cemented, the temporary bridge or crown is removed, and the new bridge or crown is cemented over your prepared teeth or tooth.
Common Method of Rehan Dental Surgery
The most common method of Rehan Dental Surgery by crowning a tooth involves using a dental impression of a prepared tooth to fabricate the crown outside of the mouth. The Crown and Bridges can then be inserted at a subsequent dental appointment. Using this indirect method of tooth restoration allows the use of strong restorative materials requiring time-consuming fabrication methods requiring intense heat, such as casting metal or firing porcelain which would not be possible to complete inside the mouth.
Crowns are caps placed on top of a tooth to restore function and appearance following restorative procedures like root canals. Crowns are used to restore teeth that have experienced radical decay, requiring the removal of much of the tooth. Crowns can also attach bridges, cover implants, prevent tooth cracks from spreading, and keep fillings from becoming loose.
A bridge or Crown is used to entirely cover or cap a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth and allowing it to function normally it also can be used to improve the tooth’s appearance, shape, or alignment.
Life Span of Crowns and Bridges
Although no dental restoration lasts forever, the average lifespan of a crown is around 10 years.
While this is considered comparatively favorable to direct restorations, they can actually last up to the life of the patient (50 years or more) with proper care.
The most important factor affecting the lifespan of any restorative is continuing oral hygiene as with any fixed prosthesis including Crowns and bridges, maintaining good oral hygiene to prevent plaque formation around the crowns and bridges is a key factor to ensure prolonged performance as bridges can lose their support if the teeth or bone holding it in place is damaged by dental disease.
Keep your gums and teeth healthy by brushing with any fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing regularly. Also, see our dentists as prescribed for checkups and professional cleanings. To prevent damage to your new bridge or crown, avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or other hard objects.
